Conclusion

In these two songs we've seen beautiful poetry. Some years before, people would have been writing poems to show their problems and to talk about life, love or hope. In our days songs can reach a bigger popularity than poems. So if you want to make a change and if you want to make the world a better place you'd better write a song. Like Birdy or P!nk. Even if you can't sing you can sing your songs and become famous nervertheless your voice is horrible. The best example therefor is Bob Dylan.
An other possibility is to rap your poems. This is another way if you can't sing.
Your song doesn't even has to rhyme! But you have to find a rhythm and a melody for your song. This melody is very useful to a song. It supports the meaning and even if you do not really understand the song you can guess if it's a happy or a sad one.

An english song by the way has a bigger chance to be famous all around the world than a german, french, or whatever-song. It's because english is the language that almost everyone in the world is able to speak and understand. And for the young generation, like us, english is much "cooler" than other languages. We use a lot of anglicisms.
Sometimes the young people are singing english songs in their religion lessons. The normal church songs use a pretty old german. It's often harder to understand for guys in our age than english songs!

POPMUSIC

In the world of pop, there eare many writers, who write texts about sex love but also about politics and social problems. Politics have a long tradition in the history of popmusic. The political songs are not obligatory dealing with real situations. More precisely the politic problems are mixed with art.  This is another way to make a song unique.
What's more the popmusic is often made by young musicians who bring a new style into the classic pop.

Dear Mr. President - P!nk

Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me.
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why?

Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say
No child is left behind?
We're not dumb and we're not blind.
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?

Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Dear Mr. President,
You'd never take a walk with me.
Would you?

P!nk's song is a critical one. It's totally different from "People help the people" But its another great example for poetry in english music. P!nk is talking about the President George W. Bush. The song is written like a letter. She shows us the stupid things George W. Bush has done. Bush, she says, takes the rights of his own daughter away. And she says that he is very racist against homosexuals. You need a lot of courage to criticise the most powerful man in the world. And that is what she actually does in the song. She also asks many questions to him. But those questions are more an accusation, than a real question. It is a great song! -because it opens our eyes.

People help the People - Birdy

God knows what is hiding,
In those weak and drunken hearts.
I guess you kissed the girls and made them cry,
Those Hardfaced Queens of misadventure.

God knows what is hiding,
In those weak and sunken eyes.
A Fiery throng of muted angels,
Giving love but getting nothing back.

People help the people,
And if your homesick,
Give me your hand and I'll hold it.
People help the people,
And nothing will drag you down.
Oh and if I had a brain,
Oh and if I had a brain,
I'd be cold as a stone,
And rich as the fool,
That turned all those good hearts away.

God knows what is hiding,
In this world of little consequence.
Behind the tears, inside the lies,
A thousand slowly dying sunsets.

God knows what is hiding,
In those weak and drunken hearts.
I guess the loneliness came knocking,
No one needs to be alone, oh singing,

People help the people,
And if your homesick,
Give me your hand and I'll hold it.
People help the people,
And nothing will drag you down.
Oh and if I had a brain,
Oh and if I had a brain,
I'd be cold as a stone,
And rich as the fool,
That turned all those good hearts away.

People help the people,
And if your homesick,
Give me your hand and I'll hold it.
People help the people,
And nothing will drag you down.
Oh and if I had a brain,
Oh and if I had a brain,
I'd be cold as a stone,
And rich as the fool,
That turned all those good hearts away

This song is very hopeful. She talks about people helping the other people. And about giving you her hand if you're homesick. Birdy thinks about the wrong things in our world and that you can help with your special talents. In the verses she presents us the hard reality talking about this like: "Giving love and getting nothing back".
In the first verse she describes a person who does all this stupid stuff. Playing with foolosh, naiv hearts.
Every verse starts with: " God knows what is hiding,..." it makes clear that God sees everything going on on this world. She tells us that there is at least one person that understands us!
In the Chorus Birdy tries to give us hope after listening to the hard facts of our world. She wants to give us her hand and pretends that nothing can drag us down.
